Keep proceedings orderly with a small number of guidelines.
It may help to have group agreements about how the conversation will be conducted. If you do this it’s important not to spend too much time on it, as this eats into the time you have to discuss the substantive questions. You may like to suggest some agreements and see if they are happy with them, and then amending or adding to them as necessary.
Here are some possible agreements:
- One person to speak at a time; no side conversations.
- Don’t interrupt each other.
- Stick to the topic.
- Respect everyone’s contributions, and their right to differ.
- Mobiles to be switched off, unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, which should be stated beforehand.
