Getting your independent candidate electedis far from an easy thing to achieve, and there is a likely cost if you’re unsuccessful, so it’s not a decision to be made lightly. The likely cost is that, from that point on, you will be seen by other candidates and their supporters as their political opponents, and it will be hard then for your group to play the role of impartial voters’ advocate. This is not to say it shouldn’t be attempted, but there needs to be strong and widespread community feeling that a new, community-endorsed MP is very clearly the best option, and very active community campaigning towards this outcome.
